trimming

Right tools, sound experience.

Do you want a formal or semi-formal garden? Or just a nice looking laurel hedge or buxus border? To start, you need the right tools.

Getting it right

The average hedge is about 1.75m tall. At that height you can work with garden shears or a power hedge clipper. Higher hedges require a ladder, platform and/or a pole hedge trimmer. Low borders can be done with clippers or a trimmer but you need to hold the trimmer correctly to get the best finish.

Topiary balls are easy if you know what you’re doing but you need to get the technique right.

When to hedge

Make sure you do it at the right time of year.

Some plants you can trim frequently, others just once or twice a year. Be careful about taking off too much new growth or you risk damaging the plants ability to photosynthesise.
